Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier were famous inventors from France.

They were born into a family that made paper in Annonay. Joseph was a dreamer who loved to build things. Étienne was more businesslike and studied to be an architect. Together, they changed how we see the sky. They became pioneers of aviation by inventing the hot air balloon. This invention allowed people to travel through the air for the first time.

Joseph discovered how balloons might work by watching laundry. He saw clothes rise when they were over a fire. He thought smoke could lift things because it had a special property. He called this "levity."

To test this, he built a small box made of wood and cloth. He lit paper underneath, and it hit the ceiling. The brothers then built a much larger device. On December 14, 1782, they used wool and hay as fuel. The heat created a lifting force that moved the craft. They lost control of it during that first test flight.

In 1783, the brothers began showing their work to the public. They built a globe-shaped balloon made of sackcloth and paper. On June 4, 1783, they flew it in Annonay. The flight lasted 10 minutes and reached a certain altitude. Later, they worked with a man named Jean-Baptiste Réveillon. They made a beautiful sky-blue balloon decorated with gold suns and stars.

Before humans flew, they had to make sure it was safe. On September 19, 1783, they sent a sheep, a duck, and a rooster into the air. The animals landed safely at the palace in Versailles. This proved that living things could survive the trip.

After the animals survived, humans were allowed to fly. Étienne made the first tethered flight in October 1783. This means the balloon was tied to the ground with a rope. A few weeks later, the first free flight happened in Paris.

Two men, Pilâtre de Rozier and the marquis d'Arlandes, flew for 25 minutes. They traveled about nine kilometers over the city. During the flight, embers from the fire almost burned the fabric. Pilâtre even had to take off his coat to help stop the fire. This event made the brothers famous all over the world.

Ballooning became a huge sensation in the late 1700s. People put balloon pictures on fans, furniture, and even umbrella tops. The Montgolfier family was very successful in many ways. Joseph also invented a self-acting hydraulic ram, which is a type of water pump. The brothers also found a way to make transparent paper. Their family paper company still exists today under the name Canson.
