Mohammed bin Thani was a very important leader in Qatar. Before his time, the land was not one single nation. Many different tribes lived there. Each group had its own independent leader. They did not have a unified country. Mohammed helped change this way of living. He helped the land gain more political weight.

In 1848, Mohammed and his family moved to Al Bidda. This move helped him gain more influence. In 1851, a conflict began between two leaders. Faisal bin Turki wanted to control Bahrain. He sent his forces toward Al Bidda to prepare for an invasion. Mohammed and his son led the Qatari forces to defend the area. They fought in the Battle of Mesaimeer for three days.

After the battle, Mohammed worked to find peace. He made a deal with Faisal. Mohammed agreed to be under Wahhabi governance. He also became the chief of Al Bidda. On 8 June 1851, his forces took Burj Al-Maah. This was a watchtower near Al Bidda Fort. It guarded the main water source for Doha.

These events helped Qatar become an independent place. In 1868, Mohammed met a British representative named Lewis Pelly. They signed a treaty on 12 September 1868. This made Mohammed the first ruler of the whole Qatari Peninsula. He was officially recognized by the British. This was a huge step for the nation.

Mohammed had a large family with eight children. He had six sons and two daughters. His son was Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani. Jassim became the founder of Qatar. Mohammed died on 18 December 1878. He died of natural causes. Today, the people of Qatar celebrate that day as a national holiday.
