Mohammed bin Thani was a leader in Qatar. Long ago, the land was not one single nation. Many different groups lived there. Each group had its own leader.

In 1848, Mohammed moved to a place called Al Bidda. This helped his group gain more power. In 1851, a big fight broke out. A leader named Faisal wanted to take Bahrain. He sent his forces toward Al Bidda. Mohammed and his son led the Qatari forces. They fought in the Battle of Mesaimeer for three days.

After the fight, Mohammed made a peace deal with Faisal. He also took control of a watchtower. This tower guarded the water for Doha. Later, a treaty was signed. This treaty changed who ruled the area.

These events helped Qatar become its own place. In 1868, a British official named Lewis Pelly met Mohammed. They signed a treaty together. This made Mohammed the first ruler of the whole Qatari Peninsula.

Mohammed had eight children. His son, Jassim, also became a ruler. Mohammed died in 1878. Today, that day is a holiday in Qatar.
