Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was a man who carried out a violent attack in France. In July 2016, he drove a large truck into a crowd of people. This happened on the Promenade des Anglais in the city of Nice. Many people were there to celebrate Bastille Day, which is a French holiday. The attack was very serious and caused much harm. It killed 86 people and injured 458 others.

Before the attack, Lahouaiej-Bouhlel lived a complicated life. He was born in M'saken, Tunisia, in 1985. He later moved to Nice in 2005 and worked as a delivery truck driver. His family said he had many personal struggles. They said he dealt with depression and had used drugs or alcohol. He also had trouble with his marriage and money. He had been in trouble with the police several times before.

In the months before the attack, his behavior changed. He began to show a sudden interest in radical religious ideas. Investigators found that he searched the internet for many things related to the Islamic State. He looked at photos of violence and studied other people who had committed attacks. He even visited the Promenade des Anglais in his rented truck to look at the area. He took selfies there just days before the event.

On July 14, 2016, the attack took place during the holiday celebrations. Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove the truck into the crowds on the seaside path. French police officers arrived quickly to stop him. They shot him, and he died at the scene. A French prosecutor said the attack had the signs of jihadist terrorism. This means it was done for religious and political reasons.

Different groups and officials had different views on his motives. The Amaq News Agency said he was a soldier for the Islamic State. However, French investigators could not find a direct link to an international terror group. His own family said he was not a very religious person in the past. They noted that he did not pray or follow certain religious rules. This shows how people can change their beliefs very quickly.
