Modern philosophy

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Modern philosophy is a way of thinking. It began in the 17th century. It lasted until the early 20th century. This era changed how people thought about the world.

Two main groups of thinkers emerged. The Rationalists believed knowledge comes from pure thought. Famous Rationalists include Descartes and Spinoza. They thought some ideas are born in the mind. The Empiricists had a different view. They believed knowledge comes from what we see and feel. John Locke and David Hume were major Empiricists. They valued sensory experience.

Another big idea is idealism. Idealists believe the mind helps shape reality. Georg Hegel was a famous idealist. Some thinkers focused on the individual instead. This is called existentialism. Søren Kierkegaard thought life should be lived, not just solved like a puzzle. Friedrich Nietzsche also explored these ideas. He looked at how people find freedom.

Other thinkers studied how people live together. This is called political philosophy. They asked about laws, rights, and justice. People like Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau studied these topics. These big questions still help us today.
