The mistral is a strong, cold wind. It blows through southern France. It moves from the north into the Mediterranean Sea.

This wind often happens in winter and spring. It can last for several days. Sometimes it even lasts for more than a week. The wind is caused by air pressure. High pressure sits in the Bay of Biscay. Low pressure sits near the Gulf of Genoa. This pulls cold air down through the Rhône Valley.

The valley is long and narrow. This helps the wind move very fast. The wind can reach speeds of more than 90 km/h. It can even reach 100 km/h. This wind makes the sky very clear. It blows away dust and clouds. This gives the area bright sunshine.

Because the wind is so strong, it changes things. Trees often grow leaning to the south.

The wind also makes the air very dry. This can make forest fires spread fast. In the summer, the wind can even cool the sea.
