This fish lives in many parts of Europe and Asia. It is a scavenger that eats many things. It looks for small animals and bits of waste on the bottom. This fish is very long and thin. This shape helps it hide in small spaces. It can burrow through the mud and sand easily.

To find food, the weatherfish uses its barbels. Barbels are tiny whiskers on its face. It has six barbels on its upper jaw. It also has four smaller ones on its lower jaw.

These whiskers help it feel for food in the dark. The fish also has a clever way to breathe. When there is not enough air in the water, it swims up. It gulps air from the surface of the water. The air travels through its intestines. Blood vessels take the oxygen from the air. Then the fish lets the air out through its anus.

People have known about this fish for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named this animal in 1758. He was a famous scientist who studied many living things. Today, we call this fish Misgurnus fossilis. It belongs to a group of fish called true loaches. Some fishermen say they have caught very large ones. They say some fish grow even longer than the usual size. If this is true, it would be the largest true loach.

Weatherfish live in many different places. They are found north of the Alps in Europe. They live from the Meuse River to the Neva River in Russia. They also live near the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. You can find them in the Volga River and the Ural River.

Adults like to live in thick groups of underwater plants. Young fish prefer to stay in very shallow water near the shore. They like to be near bits of waste called detritus. They do not like to live in open water without plants.

Because they love plants, weatherfish need careful habitats. Removing weeds or digging in the mud can be a hard job for them. This can be a danger to their population. Most weatherfish are listed as a species of least concern. However, they are still protected in most places where they live.

You can think of them like little explorers. They use their thin bodies to go where other fish cannot. They can even breathe air to stay alive in tough spots.
