Accidents happen for many reasons. Sometimes, poisonous gases leak from the rocks. These gases can be very dangerous. Other times, coal dust or natural gases can explode. Rocks can also fall or the mine can flood.

Coal mining is often more risky than mining hard rock. This is because of the way the rocks lie. Methane gas and coal dust also make it unsafe. Most deaths happen in places that do not use full safety rules.

The worst mining disaster in history happened in China. It took place in the Benxihu coal mine in 1942.

A fire started in the mine. To stop the fire, leaders blocked the air. This trapped the workers inside. Many people died from a lack of air. In total, 1,518 Chinese workers and 31 Japanese workers died. It took ten days to reach them. Later, a report said the deaths were caused by the choices of the leaders.
