A minimum wage is a law about pay. It is the lowest amount a boss can pay a worker.

Laws about pay have a long history. In 1349, King Edward III set a limit on pay in England. This was a maximum wage, not a minimum one. Later, rules changed to help set a living wage. In 1894, New Zealand passed the first modern laws for minimum pay. These laws helped workers in sweatshops. Sweatshops were places where people worked for very little money.

Today, many countries use these laws. Most countries have some kind of rule for pay. In the United States, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. However, some states have higher rates. Some states do not have a minimum wage law at all.

People have different ideas about these laws. Supporters say they help families and reduce poverty. They say it helps workers feel better about their jobs. Opponents worry about the cost to businesses. They think higher pay might lead to fewer jobs. Some say workers might not be able to find work if pay is too high.
