People have fought for these rights for a long time. In the Middle Ages, people in England asked for better pay. Later, in the 1800s, many people worked in big factories. This was a time of big changes. A man named Karl Marx spoke up for workers. He thought workers should rule society.

Many groups formed to help. These groups are called trade unions. Workers in unions can talk to bosses together. This is called collective bargaining. It helps them get better rules. In the 1800s, a law in England said kids under nine could not work. It also set limits on work hours for older kids.

Today, the world has core labor standards. These are important rules for everyone. They say people should not be forced to work. They also say children should not work. This lets kids go to school instead. Groups like the ILO help watch these rules. They want to make sure work is safe for all.
