He specialized in short stories, children's stories, and fairy tales. Ogawa is widely recognized as the founder of modern children's literature in Japan. He was also a pioneer in how authors presented their work. He was one of the first writers to publish children's stories under his own name. Because of this achievement, he is often compared to Hans Christian Andersen. Some people even call him the Hans Christian Andersen of Japan. This title is also shared by Kurushima Takehiko.

Ogawa's academic background shaped his early writing career. He attended Waseda University to study English literature. He graduated from the Faculty of English Literature in 1905. During this time, Waseda University was a major center for the Japanese Naturalism movement. This movement influenced the literary environment he entered. In that same year of 1905, Ogawa published his first literary work. He later moved into the realm of fairy tales in 1910. This marked a significant shift in his creative output.

His writing style often focused on the beauty of everyday life. Ogawa frequently chose common, everyday scenarios for his children's stories. He did not always rely on grand or magical settings. Instead, he found meaning in the world around him. Two of his most famous works are "The Mermaid and the Red Candles" and "The Cow Woman." These stories demonstrate his ability to blend the ordinary with the profound. His work helped define a new way to write for younger readers.

"The Cow Woman" is a notable example of his deep storytelling. This story was published in 1919. It follows the story of a mother and her son. The plot describes a mother whose soul could not rest after her death. This was because her son was left in a state of wretched poverty. To help him, the mother appears to her son in different apparitions. These appearances are meant to lead him down the right path. The story uses these supernatural elements to explore human connections.

Ogawa's work is deeply layered with complex themes. He often incorporated religious and philosophical symbolism into his tales. He was particularly interested in the cycle of life. In his view, the death of creatures is not a final event. Instead, death serves as an opportunity to appear in a different form. This concept is a central part of "The Cow Woman." His stories use these ideas to explore how life continues through change.

Ogawa's life spanned a long period of Japanese history. He was born in 1882 and lived until 1961. This allowed him to witness many changes in literature and society. His work remains a cornerstone of Japanese literary studies. He helped establish a tradition where children's books carry significant weight. By using his own name, he helped elevate the status of the genre. His legacy is tied to the very birth of modern children's writing in his country.

His contributions connect the world of literature to broader philosophical ideas. By using symbolism, he made simple stories accessible to many. He showed how literature can address the cycle of existence. His ability to blend naturalism with fairy tales was unique. This helped bridge the gap between adult literature and children's stories. Today, his influence can still be felt in how stories are told in Japan. He remains a vital figure in the history of Japanese letters.
