Military science is the study of military processes, institutions, and behavior. It involves the study of warfare and the application of organized coercive force. This field focuses on the theory and practice of creating military capability. This capability must align with a nation's defense policy. Military scientists include many different professionals. They are researchers, theorists, engineers, and test technicians. These experts identify strategic, political, and technological elements. Their goal is to maintain a relative advantage in force. This helps increase the likelihood of favorable outcomes during peace or war.

One major area of military science is force structuring. This is the method used to organize personnel and equipment. It ensures that people and tools are ready for specific missions. In the United States, this is guided by the Table of Organization and Equipment, or TOE. The TOE is a document from the Department of Defense. It prescribes the manning and equipment for units from the divisional size down to smaller groups. It also tracks the readiness and status of these units. Using a general TOE for types of units, like infantry, makes training and financing more efficient.

Another vital component is military organization. This field develops the best ways to administer military units. It looks at how to manage the military as a whole. This includes studying mobilization and demobilization. It also covers military government in areas that have been recently liberated or conquered. Additionally, military science includes education and training. This studies how to teach soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and officers. It also covers the training of small and large units working together. For officers, this training often includes general education and political indoctrination.

Historically, military science has changed alongside human technology. During the Industrial Revolution, it was seen as a single academic discipline. It included military theory and the application of technology. It also covered how to use troops in battle or during peacetime. Before the 19th century, some thought battlefield force had not changed much since the Greeks. Major John Mitchell, a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, suggested this was true. He noted that in war, the object reacts, which is different from other sciences. This makes the study of military science uniquely complex.

As technology progressed, the complexity of warfare increased. During the Renaissance, officers used complex calculations for troop movements. These movements often used linear warfare. The introduction of gunpowder added more difficulty to building fortifications. By the 1880s, military science was an academic discipline like physics or philosophy. This was partly due to the prestige of education in a time when 75% of Europeans were illiterate. Even the way leaders communicated changed.

In the past, dispatch riders on horses carried messages. The telephone eventually changed this by making messages travel faster through space and time.

The First World War caused a massive shift in military science. Many old methods disappeared, such as the use of cavalry. The supply of huge armies became a science known as logistics. This was necessary because troops could fire ammunition faster than it could be produced. New vehicles with combustion engines also changed how armies moved. Military organization moved away from linear warfare toward assault teams and multi-skilled battalions. Commanders had to think about force structure rather than just rank and file. Tactics also changed as infantry began to cooperate with tanks, aircraft, and new artillery.

Modern military science continues to evolve with new technologies. In the United Kingdom and Europe, it is often related to civilian applications. For example, Belgium's Royal Military Academy studies it alongside social sciences and humanitarian law. In the United States, the focus is often on specific operational requirements and civil defense. We are now entering the era of artificial intelligence and cyber war. Scientists are using the scientific method to test new ideas. They are looking at how AI and digital technology will change the future of defense and combat.
