These aircraft were manufactured by many different companies, including Ford Motor Company and even furniture or piano makers. 
Gliders were eventually replaced by newer technologies as warfare changed. By the Korean War, helicopters had become the preferred method for delivering and extracting soldiers. Helicopters offer much higher precision for landing. Additionally, improvements in powered transport aircraft allowed even light tanks to be dropped by parachute. The invention of radar also removed the primary advantage of the glider. Since radar can detect aircraft regardless of noise, the silence of a glider was no longer enough for concealment. Today, gliders are no longer used in combat, but they are still used for sport and training.
