His understanding of the building blocks of nature was quite advanced. Lomonosov proposed that all matter is composed of corpuscles, which we now call atoms. He defined an element as a part of a body that cannot be broken down into smaller, different bodies. He also used the term "molecule" to describe a collection of these elements. Beyond chemistry, he viewed heat as a form of motion. He also suggested the wave theory of light and contributed to the kinetic theory of gases. These ideas connected the behavior of tiny particles to the physical laws of the universe.
Lomonosov's work in astronomy led to a significant discovery regarding our solar system. In 1761, he observed a transit of Venus from an observatory near St. Petersburg. A transit occurs when a planet passes directly between a larger body, like the Sun, and an observer. During this event, Lomonosov observed a luminous ring around the planet. He inferred that this ring was evidence of an atmosphere on Venus.
Lomonosov's journey to scientific greatness began in the far north of Russia. He was born in the village of Mishaninskaya in the Archangelgorod Governorate. His father, Vasily, was a prosperous fisherman and ship owner. As a boy, Mikhail learned to read from a neighbor named Ivan Shubny. He spent much of his youth studying religious texts and arithmetic. To pursue higher education, the 19-year-old Lomonosov walked all the way to Moscow in 1730. He lived in extreme poverty, surviving on only three kopecks a day, eating mostly black bread and kvass.
His academic career took him across Europe, which greatly expanded his knowledge. In 1736, he received a scholarship to the St. Petersburg Academy. This led to a four-year grant to study in Germany. At the University of Marburg, he studied under the philosopher Christian Wolff. 
Upon returning to Russia in 1741, Lomonosov became a central figure in the nation's intellectual life. He was named a professor of chemistry in 1745 and established the academy's first chemistry laboratory. He was also a talented artist, creating grand mosaics such as his depiction of the Battle of Poltava. 

Lomonosov's life connects the study of the physical world to the growth of national institutions. By founding Moscow University, he helped create a space for future generations of thinkers. His work in chemistry and physics helped bridge the gap between ancient theories and modern scientific methods. Even his studies in philology, or the study of language, helped build the tools for Russian intellectual expression. He remains a symbol of how curiosity and determination can change the course of history.
