His scientific career involved studying how objects move through air and space. In the late 1800s, he focused on aerodynamics and lighter-than-air flight. He developed the first aerodynamics laboratory in Russia within his own apartment. In 1897, he built the first Russian wind tunnel with an open test section. He used this math to prove that space travel was possible. In 1903, he published "Exploration of Outer Space by Means of Rocket Devices." In this work, he calculated that a minimal orbit requires a horizontal speed of 8,000 m/s. He suggested this could be achieved using multistage rockets fueled by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

Tsiolkovsky envisioned many specific technologies used in modern spaceflight. He designed spacecraft with hulls divided into distinct sections. One section would hold the pilot and copilot, while others held liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen fuel. He proposed the use of multistage rockets, which are essentially "rocket trains" of different parts.

He also conceived of airlocks for exiting ships into a vacuum. To support long-term life, he suggested closed-cycle biological systems to provide food and oxygen. Other ideas included gas rudders for steering and using fuel components to cool the spacecraft during re-entry.

While Tsiolkovsky was a brilliant theorist, he often lacked financial and official support. Many of his early scientific papers were met with indifference or were already known by others. In 1880, his paper on the kinetic theory of gases was rejected because the discoveries were made 25 years earlier. His work on all-metal airships also failed to receive government grants. Even his 1914 display of dirigible models at the Aeronautics Congress received only a lukewarm response. Despite these setbacks, he continued to produce over 400 works, including 90 pieces specifically on space travel.

His influence eventually reached the engineers who built the first real spacecraft. His theories inspired Wernher von Braun and leading Soviet engineers like Sergei Korolev and Valentin Glushko. These men were essential to the success of the Soviet space program. Tsiolkovsky's transition from a self-taught teacher in Borovsk to a global scientific icon shows the power of theoretical research. His life work connected the study of physics to the grand goal of human expansion into the universe.
