Mikaël Kingsbury is a world-renowned Canadian freestyle skier. He is widely considered one of the most successful athletes in the history of moguls skiing. Moguls is a discipline where skiers navigate a steep course covered in large bumps. Kingsbury has achieved incredible dominance in this sport through years of consistent performance. He holds several major records, including 100 career World Cup moguls wins. He also holds the record for 13 consecutive Freestyle World Cup event wins. His career is defined by his ability to maintain high levels of skill across many years.

To understand his success, one must look at the specific disciplines he masters. Kingsbury competes in both moguls and dual moguls events. In a standard moguls event, a skier descends the bumpy course alone to be judged on their technique and speed. In dual moguls, two skiers race against each other simultaneously on parallel courses. The winner is determined by a points system. Kingsbury is the first man to achieve a sweep of both event types at the World Championships. He has accomplished this feat of winning both moguls and dual moguls three separate times.

Kingsbury's rise to prominence began with very early success on the international circuit. In 2010, he was named the FIS World Cup Rookie of the Year. During that same year, he became the first 18-year-old to win a FIS Freestyle World Cup event. He followed this by winning his first World Cup podium in his first full season. His breakthrough continued into the 2011–2012 season, which remains his most successful in terms of points. During that season, he won eight golds, four silvers, and one bronze. This performance earned him his first FIS Freestyle Crystal Globe for moguls and the overall Crystal Globe for all freestyle disciplines.

Throughout his career, Kingsbury has engaged in intense rivalries that pushed his limits. He often competed against his Canadian teammate, Alexandre Bilodeau. During the 2013–2014 season, Bilodeau actually overtook Kingsbury in the standings. This rivalry led to a dramatic finish in the final event of the season. At age 21, Kingsbury defeated Bilodeau in a dual moguls final to secure his 21st career win. This victory allowed him to surpass Jean-Luc Brassard for the most World Cup wins by a Canadian. He eventually edged Bilodeau by just one point to win the overall freestyle title.

His record-breaking achievements are backed by significant numbers and titles. Kingsbury is a 13-time FIS Freestyle World Cup title-holder for overall moguls. He has also won nine titles for overall freestyle. He holds the record for the most medals won by any male competitor at the Freestyle World Championships. Specifically, he has earned a medal in 15 of the 16 events he has entered. His dominance is also visible in his points totals. In one season, he earned 1180 out of a possible 1300 points in the moguls discipline. This set a new record for the most points in a single season for an individual discipline.

Olympic competition has been a central part of his legacy. Kingsbury has reached the Olympic podium multiple times. He won the gold medal in men's moguls at the 2018 Winter Olympics. He also won the gold medal in men's dual moguls at the 2026 Winter Olympics. In addition to his golds, he earned silver medals in 2014 and 2022. He was the first male moguls skier to win three Olympic medals. His excellence was recognized in Canada with the Lou Marsh Trophy and the Lionel Conacher Award. These honors named him the top athlete in the country.

Even significant setbacks have not stopped his progress. During the 2020–2021 season, Kingsbury suffered a serious injury. He fractured his T4 and T5 vertebrae while training for a World Cup event. This injury forced him to miss the first three events of the season. However, he showed great resilience by returning to competition later that year. He won both of his final two World Cup events of that season. He also swept both moguls events at the 2021 Freestyle World Championships in Kazakhstan. His career continues to be a testament to endurance and technical mastery.
