Midwifery

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Midwifery is a special health science and profession. It focuses on pregnancy, childbirth, and the time after a baby is born. Midwives also care for the sexual and reproductive health of women throughout their lives.

This work is very important for families. In many countries, midwifery is a medical profession. This means midwives receive their own special and direct education. They are experts in their own field.

One way midwives work is through a model called midwifery-led continuity of care. In this model, a woman works with one or more midwives who have the main responsibility for her care. This builds a deep relationship based on trust and personal care.

This is different from medical-led care, where a doctor is the main person in charge. Some models use shared care between a midwife and a doctor. A 2015 Cochrane review found that this type of care can be very helpful. It was linked to fewer uses of epidurals and fewer instrumental births.

Midwifery has a very long history. In ancient Egypt, it was a recognized job for women. The Ebers Papyrus, from 1900 to 1550 BCE, shows that they studied childbirth.

The Westcar Papyrus, from 1700 BCE, even describes different styles of birth chairs. In ancient Greece and Rome, there were many kinds of midwives. Some were village healers, while others were highly trained medical specialists. A physician named Soranus of Ephesus wrote about what made a good midwife in the 2nd century. He said they should be smart, have a good memory, and be sympathetic.

In the past, midwives used specific tools to help mothers. They often used a special birth chair or stool. These chairs often had a crescent-shaped hole for the baby to be delivered.

The mother could sit upright and hold onto armrests. The midwife would sit in front of her to offer support and instruction. After the birth, the midwife would clean the baby with cloth. They might use olive oil or salt to help clean the newborn. They also checked to see if the baby was healthy and strong.

Today, midwifery helps people in many different ways. In some cultures, like in Zimbabwe, midwifery is a very traditional way to have a baby.

The World Health Organization says women should be able to give birth where they feel safest. For some, that means having a midwife at home. Modern studies in places like Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom show that midwifery-led care can save money. It also helps women feel more satisfied with their care. This shows that this ancient profession is still very important today.
