The midbrain is a very small but important part of your brain.

It sits at the very top of the brainstem. This part connects your higher brain to the rest of the brainstem. It is quite short, measuring less than 2cm in length. The name mesencephalon comes from Greek words meaning "middle brain."

This small area helps you see and hear. It also helps you move, stay awake, and control your body temperature.

The midbrain has several main parts that work together. The tectum is the "roof" of the midbrain. On top of the tectum are four small mounds called colliculi. The superior colliculi help you process vision and move your eyes. The inferior colliculi help you process sounds.

Below the tectum is the tegmentum, which acts like a floor. Between the roof and the floor is a narrow channel called the cerebral aqueduct. This channel lets important fluid flow through your brain.

Scientists use a fun trick to remember these shapes. When looking at a cross-section, the midbrain looks like a bear's face.

The cerebral peduncles look like the bear's ears. The cerebral aqueduct looks like the bear's mouth. The tectum forms the chin of the face. Even the tegmentum helps form the eyes of the bear. This helps people visualize how the different parts are laid out.

One very special area is the substantia nigra. This name means "black substance" because it is dark in color. It is dark because it contains a lot of melanin. This area is part of the basal ganglia system. It helps you plan your movements and learn new things.

The substantia nigra also makes dopamine. If the cells that make dopamine are lost, it can lead to Parkinson's disease.

Many things in your body rely on the midbrain to work. For example, the ventral tegmental area makes dopamine for your reward system. This helps with motivation and habits. Even tiny insects use similar systems for these tasks. In a growing human embryo, the midbrain comes from the second part of the neural tube. Unlike other parts of the brain, the midbrain does not split into smaller sections as you grow. It stays as one steady piece of your brain structure.
