The brainstem is a small but vital part of your brain.

It acts like a bridge. This stalk-like part connects the cerebrum to the spinal cord. Even though it is small, it is very busy. It makes up only 2.6 percent of the brain's total weight.

The brainstem has three main parts. The top part is the midbrain. The middle part is the pons. The bottom part is the medulla oblongata. These parts work together to keep you alive.

This part of the brain works like a busy highway for messages.

It carries sensory signals from your body up to the brain. These signals include pain, temperature, and itch. It also carries motor signals from the brain down to the body. One pathway for movement is the corticospinal tract. Another pathway helps you feel fine touch and vibration. The brainstem also manages your sleep cycle and keeps you awake. It even helps control your heart rate and how you breathe.

The midbrain is the highest part of the brainstem. It has a ceiling called the tectum. This ceiling has two bumps called the superior and inferior colliculi. The superior colliculus helps with vision. The inferior colliculus helps with hearing.

Below the tectum is the tegmentum, which is the floor. The midbrain also contains the substantia nigra. This area uses a chemical called dopamine to help with movement and emotion. If this area does not work right, it can lead to Parkinson's disease.

Moving down, you find the pons and the medulla. The pons sits between the midbrain and the medulla. It connects the brain to the cerebellum.

The pons also helps control your breathing. The medulla oblongata is the lowest part. It connects directly to the spinal cord. The medulla manages your heart rate and blood pressure. It even has an area called the area postrema that controls vomiting. These parts are essential for your body to function.

Scientists learn how the brainstem grows by looking at early stages.

The brainstem comes from parts of the neural tube. The midbrain comes from the mesencephalon. The rest of the brainstem comes from the rhombencephalon. This part splits into the metencephalon and the myelencephalon. The metencephalon becomes the pons and the cerebellum. The myelencephalon becomes the medulla. Understanding these parts helps us see how our whole body is built.
