These small animals lived in China a long time ago. They lived during the early Cretaceous period. This was about 125 to 120 million years ago.

They are part of a group called dromaeosaurids. Finding their fossils helps us learn how birds and dinosaurs are related. They were very common in their homes. In fact, they were among the most common dinosaurs in their ecosystem.

What made Microraptor unique was its many feathers. It had long, pennaceous feathers on its arms. It also had long feathers on its legs.

This gave the dinosaur four wings. A scientist named Xu Xing called it a "four-winged dinosaur" in 2003. He thought it might have used all four limbs to glide through the air. Later studies suggested it might have been able to fly using powered flight. One fossil even shows it grew new feathers in a way similar to modern birds.

The story of finding these fossils is quite a mystery. At first, a fake fossil was found. It was a patchwork of different animals mixed together.

People called this fake animal Archaeoraptor. Xu Xing discovered the truth about the forgery. He found the real remains of the animal's tail. He gave the real species the name Microraptor zhaoianus. This helped clear up the confusion in the scientific world. It showed that the "Archaeoraptor" was not a real single animal.

Scientists have found many different fossils of this dinosaur. There are possibly over 300 specimens in museum collections.

Most of these fossils come from the Jiufotang Formation in Liaoning, China. Some fossils show that the animal might have had shiny, black feathers.

Researchers once thought there were different species like Microraptor gui or Cryptovolans pauli. However, many scientists now believe these were just different ages of the same species. This is called individual variation. Most experts now use the name Microraptor zhaoianus for them.

You can compare Microraptor to the birds you see today. Even though it was a dinosaur, it had many bird-like traits.

Finding their fossils provides vital evidence for the evolutionary relationship between birds and earlier dinosaurs.

The most striking feature of Microraptor is its unique feather arrangement. It possessed long pennaceous feathers, which are feathers with a central shaft and interlocking barbs. These feathers formed aerodynamic surfaces on its arms and its tail. Most notably, it also had long feathers on its legs.

In 2003, paleontologist Xu Xing described the first specimen to show this feature. He called it a "four-winged dinosaur" because of these extra surfaces. He speculated that the animal might have used all four limbs to glide for lift. Later studies have suggested that Microraptor may have also been capable of powered flight.

Scientific study of Microraptor has involved complex debates regarding its classification. Initially, three species were named: M. zhaoianus, M. gui, and M. hanqingi. However, further research suggested these were actually variations within a single species. Most scientists now consider M. zhaoianus to be the correct name for the species.

A similar situation occurred with the genus Cryptovolans. Initially described as a separate four-winged dinosaur, it is now usually considered a synonym of Microraptor. Researchers like Phil Senter have suggested that differences in fossils often represent different age groups rather than different species.

The history of Microraptor is tied to a famous scientific controversy involving a forgery. The first specimen described was actually a chimeric specimen. This means it was a patchwork made from different feathered dinosaur species.

These pieces were assembled and smuggled to the USA for sale. When Xu Xing revealed the forgery, the name "Archaeoraptor" was used for the fake animal. To distance the record from the forgery, curator Storrs L. Olson published a description of the tail under the name Archaeoraptor liaoningensis. However, Xu Xing later published the description of the actual remains as Microraptor zhaoianus.

Because of these naming issues, the status of the names became legally complex under scientific rules. The name Microraptor eventually became a "nomen protectum," or a protected name. This is because it was used more frequently in published works than the original fake name. The name Archaeoraptor is considered a "nomen vanum," which means it was improperly described.

This event serves as a significant lesson in the importance of careful fossil authentication.

Microraptor fossils are remarkably abundant and provide deep biological insights. There are possibly over 300 fossil specimens in various museum collections. Most of these were recovered from the Jiufotang Formation in Liaoning, China. One specific specimen shows evidence of active primary sequential moulting. This is the process where feathers are replaced in a specific order. This behavior is similar to modern volant, or flight-capable, birds.

Such evidence is among the few known for pennaraptoran dinosaurs.

New discoveries continue to add detail to our understanding of this genus. One specimen, BMNHC PH881, revealed that Microraptor likely had glossy-black iridescent plumage. This means its feathers might have shimmered with color like some modern birds.

This specimen also showed a bifurcated tailfan, which is a tail that splits into two parts. While some specimens show a nuchal crest, other evidence suggests this might just be a result of taphonomic distortion. Taphonomy is the study of how organisms decay and become fossils. This distortion can change the shape of bones during the fossilization process.
