It also possessed three fingers with claws on its wings and a hyperextensible second toe, often called a "killing claw." 
In terms of size, Archaeopteryx was relatively small. Most individuals were similar in size to a modern Eurasian magpie. The largest specimens might have reached the size of a raven.
The history of its discovery is quite famous. In 1861, a single feather was described by researchers. 

Many different specimens have been found over the decades. Each one provides unique details about the genus. The Berlin Specimen is one of the most famous. It was discovered in 1874 or 1875 by a farmer named Jakob Niemeyer. He sold the fossil to buy a cow! 
Other specimens add even more layers to our understanding. The Maxberg Specimen consists of a torso but lacks a head and tail. The Munich Specimen was sold in 1999 for 1.9 million Marks. Scientists once thought it had a bony sternum, but it was actually a coracoid. 

Archaeopteryx helps scientists understand the complex origins of birds. While it was once seen as the very beginning of the bird family tree, recent finds have made things more complicated. New discoveries of small, feathered dinosaurs raise questions about which animals are true ancestors.
