People often call them mics. We use them in phones and hearing aids. They also help us record music.

Long ago, people used theater masks to help voices grow. Later, inventors made a telephone using tin cans and string. In 1856, Antonio Meucci made a mic with a wire coil. This helped create the first telephones. Later, David Hughes and others made carbon microphones. These were very important for early radio.

There are different ways a mic works. A dynamic microphone uses a coil of wire. This coil moves inside a magnetic field. A condenser microphone uses a thin part called a diaphragm. This part acts like a plate in a capacitor. A capacitor is a part that stores electric charge.

Most condenser mics need power to work. This power can come from a battery. Some use a special material called an electret. An electret has a charge that stays inside it. Most mics made today are electret mics. They are cheap and work very well.
