It is known for helping people find the best places to eat. Many chefs feel great pride when they are recognized by the guide. In France, the yearly awards create a huge media frenzy. People debate who will win or lose their special honors.

This guide has become a global symbol of cooking excellence.

To find great restaurants, the guide uses secret inspectors. These people are called anonymous inspectors. They visit restaurants without telling anyone who they are. Michelin pays for all of their meals and travel costs. This ensures the chefs do not know a review is happening.

The inspectors look for very high quality in every dish.

The guide began a long time ago in the year 1900.

Two brothers named Édouard and André Michelin started it in France. At that time, there were fewer than 3,000 cars on French roads. They wanted people to drive more to use more tires. The first guide was free and included maps and hotel lists. In 1922, they began charging a small fee for it.

There are different levels of awards for restaurants. One Michelin Star means the cooking is high-quality and worth a stop.

The guide also has the Bib Gourmand for good food at moderate prices.

Some places even earn a Green Star for being sustainable.

Today, the guide covers many different parts of the world. It has editions for places like Japan, Italy, and the United States.

In 2021, Michelin moved mostly to digital apps instead of printed books. This change helps more people see the reviews for free. Some popular areas like France and Spain still have printed guides. The guide continues to grow into new cities and countries every year.
