His work was so powerful it inspired a movement called Mannerism. This style focused on expressive physical movement. Michelangelo is considered an archetypal Renaissance man. This term describes someone with great skill in many different fields. He was a contemporary and rival to Leonardo da Vinci.

To create his art, Michelangelo used several intense methods. As a young boy, he learned to use a chisel and hammer. He used these tools to carve figures out of marble. He also studied human anatomy by dissecting cadavers. This helped him understand how muscles and bones work. For his paintings, he used a technique called fresco. This involves painting directly onto wet plaster on a wall. He also designed massive structures using architectural principles. His ability to master these different crafts was legendary.

Michelangelo's career can be divided into several distinct stages. He began with small marble reliefs like the Madonna of the Stairs.

He then moved to large-scale sculpture, such as the Pietà.

Finally, he spent his later years as a major architect. He worked on the Laurentian Library and St. Peter's Basilica. Each stage showed a different way he could master space and form.

His journey began in Caprese on March 6, 1475.

His family were bankers in Florence, but the bank failed. He grew up in Settignano near a marble quarry. This environment helped him develop a love for stone. At age 13, he apprenticed under the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio.

He later attended the Platonic Academy under the Medici family. This education influenced his philosophical outlook on art. He moved between Florence, Bologna, and Rome throughout his life.

Michelangelo achieved massive success at a very young age. He completed the Pietà when he was only 24 years old.

Many notable examples of his work remain world-famous today. The David stands at 517 cm tall and 199 cm wide.

Even his architectural work was groundbreaking. The Laurentian Library helped pioneer the Mannerist style. These works demonstrate his ability to handle different materials and sizes.

Michelangelo's life connects to the broader history of Western culture. He worked for powerful patrons like the Medici and various Popes.

His influence helped bridge the gap between the High Renaissance and the Baroque era. His detailed sketches and letters make him one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century. He proved that an artist could be a scholar and a builder. His legacy continues to shape how we understand human creativity and the power of art.
