Michel Hazanavicius is a multi-talented French filmmaker. He works as a director, screenwriter, editor, and producer. These roles allow him to shape a movie from the first idea to the final cut. He was born in Paris on March 29, 1967. His family is Jewish and has roots in Lithuania and Poland. His grandparents moved to France in the 1920s. Hazanavicius has become a major figure in international cinema through his diverse storytelling.

His career began in the world of television. In 1988, he started working for the French channel Canal+. He gained experience by directing commercials for brands like Reebok and Bouygues Telecom. In 1993, he created his first feature-length film for television, La Classe américaine. This project was a unique exercise in film editing. He took footage from various Warner Bros. studio films and re-edited them. He then dubbed the footage into French to create a new experience. This early work showed his skill in manipulating existing media to tell new stories.

As he moved into theatrical films, Hazanavicius explored different genres. In 1997, he directed a short film titled Echec au capital. He later released his first theatrical feature, Mes amis, which starred his brother, Serge Hazanavicius. He also became known for directing parodies. A parody is a film that pokes fun at a specific style or genre. His OSS 117 series is a parody of 1960s spy movies. The first film, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, was released in 2006. It cost $17.5 million to make and earned $23 million at the worldwide box office. He followed this with a sequel, OSS 117: Lost in Rio, in 2009.
