His work is known for examining complex social issues and human emotions. He often explores the feeling of estrangement, which is a sense of being disconnected from others. This feeling is common in modern society. Haneke creates films in French, German, and English. Beyond cinema, he has worked in television and theater. He also shares his knowledge as a teacher of film direction at the Film Academy Vienna.

Haneke uses a specific method to engage his audience. He believes films should offer space for imagination and self-reflection. He avoids providing too much detail or easy moral clarity. Instead, he prefers to leave room for viewers to think for themselves. This approach often makes his films feel intense or challenging. He wants the audience to be active participants in the story. By not explaining everything, he forces the viewer to observe and connect the dots.

His career includes several distinct stages and styles. He began with a famous trilogy of films. These included The Seventh Continent (1989), Benny's Video (1992), and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1994). This trilogy explored how consumerism, mass media, and violence affect human relationships. Later, he moved into psychological thrillers and dramas. Some of these works, like Funny Games (1997), examined the implications of violence. Other films, like the dystopian drama Time of the Wolf (2003), looked at human behavior during a global crisis.

Haneke's journey to filmmaking was not a straight path. As an adolescent, he was a rebel who felt contempt for school. He originally hoped to become an actor. However, he failed an entrance examination at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. He eventually attended the University of Vienna to study philosophy, psychology, and drama. He spent much of his university time at local movie theaters. After university, he worked various odd jobs. He later became an editor and critic for the television station Südwestfunk.

His professional success is marked by many prestigious awards. He won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival three times. He received this honor for The Piano Teacher (2001), The White Ribbon (2009), and Amour (2012).

His film Amour was especially successful in the United States. It received five Academy Award nominations. It also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2013, he was honored with the Prince of Asturias Award for the arts.

Many of his films feature recurring actors who help bring his visions to life.

Isabelle Huppert has acted in four of his films, including The Piano Teacher and Time of the Wolf. Juliette Binoche starred in his films Code Unknown (2000) and Caché (2005). Haneke also frequently collaborated with the real-life couple Ulrich Mühe and Susanne Lothar. These actors helped him explore deep psychological themes. His film Caché, for example, dealt with collective memory and colonialism. It was even included in the BBC's list of the 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century.

Haneke's work connects deeply to broader social and political discussions. His films often act as commentaries on the world around us. For instance, Happy End (2017) offered a commentary on the European refugee crisis. Some critics noted that his films challenge the audience to look at what is happening in the background. This connects his art to the study of sociology and human behavior. His films are not just entertainment; they are tools for observing how society functions. He continues to be a significant figure in the global film community.
