He is most famous for his comedic roles as a clumsy, daydreaming character. Many experts in the film industry consider him a master of his craft. Famous actors like Louis de Funès and Gérard Depardieu have praised his comedic talent. Over the last 50 years, he has become one of France's most recognizable comedic figures. Beyond acting, Richard has also worked as a singer and a filmmaker.

Richard's career involves several different layers of the film industry. As an actor, he performs the characters seen on screen. As a screenwriter, he creates the stories and dialogue for movies. As a director, he manages the entire production process to bring a vision to life. He has directed many of the films in which he also stars. This multi-talented approach allows him to control many parts of the creative process. His work often combines physical comedy with scripted storytelling.

His filmography includes many distinct types of characters. Interestingly, Richard often plays different characters that share the same name. One such name is François Perrin, a character he played in several films. In one movie, he was a violinist mistaken for a secret agent. In another, he played a photographer. He also played a character named Pierre Renaud, who was a shy hotel cashier. Another recurring name was François Pignon, an unemployed teacher who becomes involved in a bank robbery.

Richard's journey into the arts began with a passion for cinema. Born in Valenciennes to a bourgeois family, he was the grandson of Léopold Defays. Defays was the director of the company Escaut-et-Meuse. As a student at Henri-Wallon high school, Richard often skipped classes to visit the cinema. Watching the actor Danny Kaye in the film Up in Arms inspired his vocation. He eventually moved to Paris to study dramatic arts at the Ecole Charles Dullin.

His professional career gained momentum in the late 1960s. He made a significant appearance in the 1968 film Alexandre le Bienheureux, directed by Yves Robert. In 1970, he took on the role of director for the first time with the film Le Distrait. He later collaborated closely with writer Francis Veber. This partnership led to several successful films, such as Le Jouet in 1976. He also worked with Gérard Depardieu in successful comedies like La Chèvre in 1981 and Les Fugitifs in 1986.

Richard has received numerous prestigious awards throughout his life. In 1996, he won the Best Actor award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for A Chef in Love. He was also given an Honorary Prize at the Just for Laughs Festival of Montréal in 2004. In 2006, he received an Honorary César at the 31st César Awards.

Furthermore, he was named a Chevalier, or Knight, of the Legion of Honour. These honors reflect his lasting impact on French culture.

Outside of the film studio, Richard is also a successful businessman and winemaker. Since 1986, he has managed a 50-hectare vineyard located in Gruissan. This vineyard is part of the Aude department and is named Château Bel Évêque. The estate produces approximately 80,000 bottles of red and rosé wine every year. He also owns a Paris restaurant called Au pied de chameau. His family continues his connection to the arts through music and acting.

His two sons, Olivier and Christophe, are both performers. Olivier is a member of the group Blues trottoir and plays the saxophone. Christophe is a musician who plays the double bass. Even his grandson, Arthur Defays, works in the industry as a model and actor. This shows how the performing arts remain a central part of his family's life. From the vineyard to the cinema, Richard's work spans many different fields.
