The geography of Mianyang is defined by its many neighbors and its river setting. To the east, it borders Nanchong City. To the south, it meets Suining City. The southwest border connects to Deyang City. To the west lies the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. In the north, Mianyang shares a small section of its border with Gansu Province. The northeast edge touches Guangyuan City. This location within the Sichuan Basin helps shape its climate and its role in the region.

Mianyang experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, known as Köppen Cwa. This means the area has four distinct seasons and is generally mild and wet. Summers are long, hot, and very humid. Most of the rainfall occurs between May and September, which accounts for over 70% of the annual total. Winters are short, mild, and often foggy. While frost can occur, snow is quite rare in this region. The average annual temperature typically stays between 18 °C and 21 °C.

The history of Mianyang spans over 2,200 years. The area was known as Fuxian or Fu County in ancient times. Its recorded history began in 201 BCE when Emperor Gaozu of Han established the first county there. During the Qin and Han dynasties, the region saw advanced progress in agriculture. Because of its strategic location, Mianyang became a town of great military importance. It acted as a natural defense for the city of Chengdu. However, the region faced a major tragedy during the earthquake on May 12, 2008. While the city proper suffered light damage, Beichuan County was hit very severely. In Beichuan, the collapse of two main buildings at a high school caused the deaths of over 1,000 students. As of June 7, 2008, the total casualties in the Mianyang Prefecture reached 21,963 deaths, 167,742 injuries, and 8,744 missing persons.

Scientific innovation continues to drive the local economy through new specialized facilities. Mianyang has established a regional Nuclear Medical Imaging Data Center. This facility collects and anonymizes medical imaging data from various hospitals. This data supports large-scale medical research and AI-assisted diagnostics. The center must follow strict protocols to ensure patient privacy and data security. This work connects Mianyang's heavy scientific research roots to modern medical technology. The provincial government is also working to give the city more power to manage its own economic development. This is intended to help build the scientific city even further.
