The history of Mianyang spans over 2,200 years. The area was known as Fuxian or Fu County in ancient times. Its recorded history began in 201 BCE when Emperor Gaozu of Han established the first county there. During the Qin and Han dynasties, the region saw advanced progress in agriculture. Because of its strategic location, Mianyang became a town of great military importance. It acted as a natural defense for the city of Chengdu. However, the region faced a major tragedy during the earthquake on May 12, 2008. While the city proper suffered light damage, Beichuan County was hit very severely. In Beichuan, the collapse of two main buildings at a high school caused the deaths of over 1,000 students. As of June 7, 2008, the total casualties in the Mianyang Prefecture reached 21,963 deaths, 167,742 injuries, and 8,744 missing persons.

Today, Mianyang is a massive center for the electronics and scientific research industries. It is home to the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) and Science City. This military research complex was the site where China developed its first nuclear bomb. The city hosts 18 different institutes and 50 large or medium-sized enterprises. One notable company is Sichuan Changhong Electric Co., Ltd. In 2004, this company was the largest television manufacturer in China. It provided two-thirds of the total revenue for the city of Mianyang.
