Methyl salicylate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Methyl salicylate is a clear, thick liquid. It has a very sweet and fruity smell. Many people think it smells like root beer. Others say it smells like mint. This liquid is an organic compound. It is also called wintergreen oil.

Many different types of plants make this oil. Some plants make only a little bit. Other plants make much larger amounts. It is a very useful substance in nature and in science.

In nature, this oil works like a message. When a plant is hurt by bugs or germs, it makes more oil. The oil is volatile, which means it can float through the air. These floating signals can reach other parts of the same plant. They can even reach nearby plants. This acts like a warning to tell neighbors of danger.

The oil can also call for help. It attracts good insects like lady beetles or lacewings. These insects then come to eat the pests that are hurting the plant.

Humans first found this oil a long time ago. A French chemist named Auguste André Thomas Cahours isolated it in 1843. He found it in a plant called Gaultheria procumbens. He discovered it was an ester made from salicylic acid and methanol.

In the past, people made the oil by distilling twigs. They used twigs from the black birch or the wintergreen plant. Today, most of the oil is made in factories using a process called synthesis.

We use this oil in many everyday things. You might taste it in root beer or minty chewing gum. It is even found in Listerine mouthwash. Some people use it in creams to help with muscle pain.

It can even make things glow! If you crush certain mint candies in a dark room, the sugar crystals spark. This happens because the methyl salicylate absorbs light and sends it back out. Scientists also use it to make tiny tissue samples clear for microscopes.

Even though it is useful, we must be very careful. This oil can be deadly if a child swallows it. Just one teaspoon is as strong as almost twenty aspirin tablets.

It is very important to only use it as the instructions say. Most accidents happen when people use too much pain cream on their skin. Always remember that even helpful things must be used with care.
