A metaphor is a special way to use words.

It happens when you call one thing by the name of another. This helps people see hidden links between ideas. A metaphor is not the same as a simile. A simile uses words like "as" or "like." A metaphor is often much stronger. It says one thing actually is another thing.

William Shakespeare used a famous metaphor. He wrote that "all the world's a stage." He meant that life is like a play. In this idea, people are like actors.

This is called an extended metaphor. It keeps the same comparison going for a long time.

Some metaphors are even "dead." This means people use them so often they do not notice them. For example, we say we "grasp" an idea. We do not really grab an idea with our hands. The word "metaphor" itself comes from a Greek word. It means to "carry over" one meaning to another. This helps us learn in a fun way. Aristotle said metaphors make learning pleasant. They help us understand the world in new ways.
