The mesosphere is the third layer of our air.

It sits above the stratosphere. It is also below the thermosphere. People sometimes call this area "near space."

In this layer, it gets colder as you go up. The very top is the coldest part of our air. We call this top edge the mesopause. Temperatures there can fall below -90 degrees Celsius.

Many things happen in the mesosphere. Millions of meteors fall through it each year. These meteors leave behind tiny bits of smoke. This smoke helps make noctilucent clouds.

These are special, glowing clouds.

You might also see green lights here. They look like sandy ripples on a beach. Scientists call them "dunes." These lights come from solar particles hitting oxygen.

Sometimes, lightning happens in this layer too. These flashes are called red sprites.

This layer is hard to study. Planes fly too low to reach it. Spacecraft fly too high to stay there. Because of this, some people call it the "ignorosphere."
