Mesosphere

The mesosphere is the third layer of Earth's atmosphere.

It sits directly above the stratosphere. It also stays directly below the thermosphere. Some people call this region "near space." This name is not a formal scientific term. However, it describes the area between high-flying planes and low satellites. This layer is very important for our planet. It is where many amazing things happen.

In the mesosphere, the air gets colder as you go higher. This happens because there is less ozone to absorb solar radiation. Ozone is a gas that catches energy from the sun. Also, the gas called CO2 helps cool the air. The very top of this layer is called the mesopause. This is the coldest part of our entire atmosphere. Temperatures there can drop below -100 degrees Celsius.

Many special things happen in this thin air. Millions of meteors enter our atmosphere every year. This adds about 40,000 tons of material to Earth. As meteors break apart, they leave behind "meteoric smoke." This smoke helps form noctilucent clouds.

These are glowing clouds found in the upper mesosphere. You might also see a deep layer of sodium atoms. This sodium layer helps create a soft light called airglow.

Scientists have found strange lights in this layer too. In October 2018, they found a new type of aurora. These lights look like sandy ripples on a beach. People call them "dunes."

These green lights come from solar particles hitting oxygen molecules. You can also find electrical flashes called red sprites. These are a type of lightning in the lower mesosphere. They are very interesting to study.

This layer is one of the hardest places to explore. It is too high for most airplanes to reach. It is also too low for most spacecraft to stay. High atmospheric drag makes it hard for satellites to orbit here. Because it is so hard to study, people call it the "ignorosphere."

We can only send small sounding rockets into this layer. These rockets can only stay there for a few minutes. We are still learning so much about this place.
