Ionosphere

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

High above the Earth is a special layer of air. It is called the ionosphere.

This layer is made of tiny parts called ions. Ions are atoms that have an electric charge.

Sunlight makes the ionosphere. The sun sends out radiation. This light hits the gas in our air. The light knocks electrons off the atoms. This process is called ionization.

Because of this, the ionosphere can carry electricity. This helps radio signals travel to far places. The signals can bounce off the layer to reach distant lands. The ionosphere also affects GPS signals. It can change their path or make them arrive late. The sun changes this layer every day. During the day, the layers are very active. At night, some layers fade away. The F layer stays active even at night. This layer is the main part that bounces radio waves.
