Mesa has a very long history that started 2,000 years ago. A group called the Hohokam lived there first. They built huge canals to move water across the dry desert. These canals helped turn the sand into green farms. Later, in 1877, people from Utah arrived to settle the area. They used the old Hohokam canals to water their own crops.
