The land in Mendoza changes a lot depending on where you stand. In the west, the ground rises into high, snowy mountains. The highest peak is Aconcagua, which reaches 6,959 meters.

As you move east, the mountains get lower. You will find valleys like Uspallata between the peaks. Further east, the land becomes much flatter. These are the Cuyean plains. Many rivers, like the Mendoza and Atuel, flow through these plains. These rivers start from cold glaciers high in the mountains.

Mendoza has a very long and interesting history. People lived in the area many thousands of years ago. Some sites, like Agua de la Cueva, are 12,000 years old. Later, the Agrelo culture lived in the river valleys. They grew things like maize, beans, and pumpkins. In 1561, a man named Pedro del Castillo founded the city of Mendoza. In 1817, José de San Martín led his army across the Andes. This helped the region work toward independence from Spain. Later, an earthquake in 1861 nearly destroyed the capital city.
