Water is very important in this dry region. The climate is arid, which means it is very dry. Most rain falls during the summer months. Because there is so little rain, people must use irrigation. This is a way to move water to plants. Long ago, tribes like the Huarpes made clever water systems. The Spanish later developed these systems to help more people live there. Today, you can still see wide stone trenches called acequias. These canals run along the streets to water 100,000 trees.

The history of Mendoza is quite long. Pedro del Castillo founded the city in 1561. He named it after the governor of Chile. Before the Spanish arrived, the Huarpes and Puelches lived there. In 1861, a very strong earthquake hit the city. It killed at least 5,000 people. The city had to be rebuilt from the ground up. The new layout used wider streets and large squares. These changes helped the city stay safer during future earthquakes.
