This was a very big turtle. 
It lived on islands long ago. It had large horns on its head. It also had a tail with spikes. 
These spikes helped the turtle stay safe. The horns might have helped it eat plants, too. It could push leaves out of the way. 
Scientists found many of its bones. Most were found on an island. They found even some eggs.
Now these turtles are gone. They lived a long time ago.
Meiolania was a large, extinct turtle. 
It lived long ago in parts of Australasia. This includes places like Australia, New Caledonia, and Fiji. 
This turtle had many special parts. It had a shell with spiky edges. Its front legs were covered in hard plates called osteoderms. 

Fossils show these turtles lived in dry areas or on beaches. Some fossils even include nests with eggs. 
We do not know exactly why they died out. It might be due to climate change. Rising sea levels may have shrunk their homes. They may have also faced new animals or humans. 
Meiolania was a very large and unusual type of extinct turtle. 



Many of these body parts had helpful jobs for daily life. The massive, cow-like horns on their heads were very special. These horns might have helped the turtles while they were foraging. They could brush aside thick plants to reach food. 

Learning about Meiolania took a long time and involved many people. In the late 1800s, a scientist named Richard Owen first described them. At first, he thought they were a type of lizard. He even named them after a giant lizard called Megalania. Later, other scientists like Thomas Henry Huxley realized they were actually turtles. This led to many different names and ideas about how they were related to modern animals. Researchers like Charles Anderson and Eugene S. Gaffney continued this work. They helped piece together the history of these amazing creatures.
There are many important facts about different species of Meiolania. The most famous one is called Meiolania platyceps. Many of its fossils were found on Lord Howe Island. Another species, Meiolania brevicollis, is the oldest one we know. It lived during the Miocene period in mainland Australia. 

We still have big questions about why Meiolania disappeared. It is not fully understood how they moved between islands. Some people thought they might have swam, but they were likely too heavy for that. 
Meiolania was an extinct genus of meiolaniid stem-turtles. These animals lived throughout much of the Cenozoic era in the Australasia region. 

The anatomy of Meiolania was built for protection and utility. The carapace was somewhat raised and featured spiky edges. Their front limbs were covered in osteoderms, which are bony plates in the skin. 

Researchers recognize several distinct species within the genus. The most well-known is Meiolania platyceps. Hundreds of its specimens were collected from Pleistocene strata on Lord Howe Island. The oldest known species is Meiolania brevicollis. This species lived during the Miocene epoch on mainland Australia. 
The history of discovering Meiolania is complex and filled with scientific debate. In the late 19th century, Richard Owen first described the remains. Interestingly, Owen initially identified the fossils as a type of lizard. He believed they were related to the giant squamate Megalania. He even named the genus after that lizard. However, other researchers like Thomas Henry Huxley argued they were turtles. Huxley proposed a new name, Ceratochelys sthenurus, for the animal. Later, George Albert Boulenger suggested they were side-necked turtles, known as Pleurodira. Eventually, scientists agreed that the name Meiolania took precedence.
Many different people contributed to our knowledge of these turtles over many decades. Early collectors included John Foulis and Robert D. FitzGerald on Lord Howe Island. Geologist H. Wilkinson also collected significant remains in 1882. Later, researcher Charles Anderson finished work started by Robert Etheridge, Junior. He was the first to map where Meiolania lived on Lord Howe Island. William Nichols, a local guide, doubled the number of known specimens. 
Significant fossil finds have shaped our understanding of their lifestyle. In 1959, a nearly complete skeleton was found at Ned's Beach. This discovery included fossil eggs and a complete skeleton found in a pool. 
The reasons for the extinction of Meiolania remain a subject of study. Scientists do not fully understand how they dispersed across the region. One hypothesis suggests they moved across the submerged continent of Zealandia.
