Mega Millions is a large, multijurisdictional lottery game played across the United States.

It is a shared game managed by a consortium of many different state lotteries. The primary goal for players is to win the jackpot, which is a massive prize pool. This jackpot grows larger whenever no one wins the top prize in a drawing. Because the amounts can reach hundreds of millions of dollars, the game carries significant excitement and cultural interest. Currently, the minimum advertised jackpot for the game is $50 million.

To win the jackpot, a player must match six specific numbers drawn during the game.

The process begins with five white balls being drawn from a pool of 70. After those are drawn, a single gold-colored ball called the MegaBall is pulled from a separate pool of 24. Players must match all five white numbers and the MegaBall to claim the top prize. Each individual game currently costs $5 to play. Some jurisdictions also offer a "Just the Jackpot" option, where two plays cost $3, but this does not include lower-tier prizes.

Players can also choose to add a feature called the Megaplier for an extra $1 per play. The Megaplier is a randomly generated value that multiplies non-jackpot prizes. These multipliers can be 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10. For example, if a player matches the five white balls but not the MegaBall, the Megaplier can increase that prize to $1 million. The Texas Lottery owns the trademark for the Megaplier name. While most states offer this add-on, California is a notable exception that does not offer the multiplier.

Winners of the jackpot have two main ways to receive their money. They can choose to take the prize in 30 graduated yearly installments. These annual payments increase by 5% each year. Alternatively, winners can choose the cash-value option. This option pays out the approximate present value of all those installments at once. The cash option is the most common choice among jackpot winners. This system allows winners to decide how they want to manage their sudden wealth.

The history of the game began on September 6, 1996. At that time, it was known as The Big Game. It was designed by lottery leaders including Bill Martin from Michigan and Desiree Rogers from Illinois. Six states were the original members: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Virginia. In 2002, the game was renamed Mega Millions. The new logo featured a gold ball with six stars to represent those original six founding members. The trademark for the Mega Millions name is owned by the Illinois Lottery.

The game has grown significantly through various expansions. A major turning point occurred in 2010 due to a cross-sell agreement. This agreement allowed different lottery jurisdictions to sell both Mega Millions and Powerball tickets. Before this, players often had to find stores on state borders to access different games. Following this expansion, many states joined, including Montana, Nebraska, and Oregon. As of June 30, 2023, the game is offered in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Drawings for Mega Millions are held twice a week on Tuesday and Friday evenings. They take place at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time, even on holidays. The drawings are conducted at the WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia Lottery supervises the entire process to ensure fairness. The televised drawings are hosted by Carol Blackmon and Adria Wofford. This structured and supervised environment helps maintain the integrity of the massive prize distributions.
