Mega Millions is a large lottery game played in many parts of the United States.

People play this game for a chance to win a huge prize called a jackpot. If no one wins the jackpot, the prize amount grows larger for the next drawing. This makes the game very exciting for many people to follow. The jackpot can reach many millions of dollars. Currently, the smallest advertised jackpot is $50 million. Winners can choose to receive their money in yearly payments. These payments increase by 5% each year. Alternatively, a winner can choose a single cash-value option instead.

To play the game, you must match six specific numbers.

First, five white balls are drawn from a pool of 70. Next, one gold-colored ball called the MegaBall is drawn from a separate pool of 24. You must match all six numbers to win the top jackpot prize. Each game currently costs $5 to play. You can also add a feature called the Megaplier for an extra $1. This Megaplier multiplies some non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10. This option was first available only in Texas back in 2011.

The game has a long and changing history. It began on September 6, 1996, under the name The Big Game.

It was created by leaders from several different state lotteries. At first, only six states joined the game. These original states were Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Virginia. In 2002, the name changed to Mega Millions. The new logo featured a gold ball with six stars. These stars represent the original six states that started the game together.

Many states have joined the game over the years. As of June 30, 2023, it is offered in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2010, a big expansion allowed different lotteries to sell both Mega Millions and Powerball tickets. This made it much easier for people to play different games in one place. Many states like Montana, Nebraska, and Oregon joined during this time. Even more states joined later, such as Mississippi in 2020. Florida also became a member in May 2013.

Drawings for the game happen twice every week. They take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. These drawings happen even on holidays. The drawings are held at the WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia Lottery helps supervise the whole process. Two hosts, Carol Blackmon and Adria Wofford, lead the show. This organized system ensures that every drawing is fair for everyone playing.
