Max Horkheimer was a famous German philosopher and sociologist.

He is best known for helping create a way of thinking called Critical Theory. This theory looks at how society works and how it can be changed. Horkheimer wanted to understand how to make life more free and fair for everyone. He studied how people think and how power is used in the world. He also looked at how big social changes affect individual people. His work helped many others understand the problems in modern life.

Critical Theory works by looking at many different parts of human life.

Horkheimer believed people should study all parts of culture to change society. He tried to combine ideas from different thinkers. For example, he mixed ideas about history with ideas about how the mind works. He wanted to see how social structures shape our own lives. He also studied how things like the marketplace affect how we act. This way of thinking helps people see the truth behind how society is organized.

Max was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1895.

His father, Moritz, was a successful businessman with many textile factories. Max worked in these factories as a young manager for a few years. In 1919, he began studying at Munich University. Later, he moved to Frankfurt to study philosophy and psychology. He met many important people during this time. One of his closest friends was a thinker named Theodor Adorno. They worked together on many big ideas for many years.

In 1930, Horkheimer became the director of the Institute for Social Research.

This group is often called the Frankfurt School. Things became very difficult in Germany during the 1930s. The Nazi party rose to power and did not like Horkheimer's ideas. Because of his ideas and his Jewish faith, he had to leave Germany. He moved to Switzerland and then to New York City. In 1934, he moved the Institute to Columbia University. He later lived in Los Angeles and became an American citizen in 1940.

After the war, Horkheimer returned to Frankfurt in 1949.

He helped the Institute for Social Research open again in 1950. He was a very respected leader in his field. He even served as the rector of the University of Frankfurt. He died in 1973 after a routine medical exam. His ideas about Critical Theory are still studied by many people today. He showed how thinking deeply can help us build a better world.
