Max Horkheimer was a German philosopher and sociologist.

He is most famous for developing Critical Theory. This was a new way to study how society works. He served as the director of the Institute for Social Research. This group is often called the Frankfurt School. Horkheimer wanted to understand how to change society for the better. He believed that people could build a more free and just world. His work focused on how reason and power affect human life.

Critical Theory uses a specific method to analyze the world. Horkheimer believed we must examine the entire material and spiritual culture of mankind. He wanted to see how social structures shape individual realities. He also looked at how the marketplace affects how people act. His method involved integrating different ideas together. Specifically, he combined historical materialism with psychoanalysis. This meant he linked the study of history with the study of the human mind. He wanted to see how these forces work together to shape society.

There are many different themes within Horkheimer's work. He analyzed the rise of instrumental reason. This is a type of thinking that focuses on efficiency rather than truth. He also studied the erosion of truth and the decline of individual autonomy. Another major focus was the social-psychological roots of authoritarianism. He wanted to know why people follow powerful leaders blindly. He also examined how modern capitalism can reproduce domination. These ideas helped create a new way to look at social problems.

Max Horkheimer was born on February 14, 1895, in Stuttgart, Germany.

He grew up in a wealthy, conservative, Orthodox Jewish family. His father, Moritz, owned several textile factories. Max actually worked as a junior manager in these factories for a time. His career in manufacturing ended when World War I began. However, he avoided military service due to medical reasons. In 1919, he enrolled at Munich University. Later, he moved to Frankfurt to study philosophy and psychology. It was there that he met his long-time collaborator, Theodor Adorno.

In 1930, Horkheimer was elected director of the Institute for Social Research. This was possible because of an endowment from a wealthy businessman. He changed the institute from an orthodox Marxist school to a new kind of research center. This new direction was called heterodox. He also started a journal called the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung. During this time, the Nazi party became very powerful in Germany. Because of his Jewish heritage and his political ideas, the Nazi government revoked his right to teach. In 1933, the institute was forced to close its German location.

Horkheimer lived in exile for many years. He first moved to Geneva, Switzerland. Then, he moved to New York City in 1934. Columbia University agreed to host the Institute for him. He eventually became an American citizen in 1940. While living in Los Angeles, he worked with Adorno on the book Dialectic of Enlightenment. He also led the Scientific Division of the American Jewish Committee. In this role, he organized studies on prejudice. These studies included a famous work called The Authoritarian Personality.

After the war, Horkheimer returned to Frankfurt in 1949. The Institute for Social Research reopened in 1950. He served as the rector of the University of Frankfurt from 1951 to 1953. He received many honors, including the Goethe Plaque. He was even named an honorary citizen of Frankfurt for life. Horkheimer died in 1973 after a routine examination in Nuremberg. He was buried in Bern next to his wife, Rose. His legacy lives on through the many thinkers he supported. His ideas remain a foundation for modern social theory.
