They sit in the East China Sea near the southeastern coast of mainland China. These islands make up Lienchiang County. This is the smallest county in the Taiwan Area by both area and population.

The islands are part of the nominal Fuchien Province. They are administered by the Republic of China. The islands are named after the main island, which is Nangan. Nangan is also called Matsu Island because of a temple there. This temple is thought to be the burial site of a goddess named Mazu.

The islands have a subtropical maritime climate. This means the weather is shaped by the ocean and monsoon winds. There are four distinct seasons to notice. During the winter, the weather is cold, cloudy, and wet. In the spring and summer, the islands are often very foggy. Autumn brings more stable weather to the region. The temperature changes a lot between the day and the night. The average annual temperature is 17°C. The average low is 13°C, while the average high is 21°C. The soil here is not very good for farming.

Many people have lived on these islands for a long time. During the Yuan dynasty, people from Fujian and Chekiang began to migrate there. Most people in Matsu came from a place called Houguan. For hundreds of years, the net fishing industry helped the settlements grow. During the Ming dynasty, some crewmen from Zheng He stayed on the islands. In the early Qing dynasty, pirates gathered there for a time. The islands are mostly made of granite and diabase rock.

The history of the islands changed a lot during the 20th century. In 1912, the Republic of China was established. Later, the Chinese Civil War began in 1927. In 1949, the islands became divided between two different governments. The mainland part went to the People's Republic of China. The Matsu Islands remained under the control of the Republic of China. In 1958, the islands faced a period of heavy bombardment. This event was part of the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis.

Today, the islands are a special place for visitors and residents. In 1999, the islands became the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration. This helps protect the natural beauty of the area. You can travel to the islands by ship from mainland China. Since 2015, tourists can apply for permits to visit more easily. The islands have a strong connection to Taiwan now. Younger people often identify specifically as being from the Matsu Islands.
