Matoke

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Matoke is a special kind of banana.

It is a main food for many people. They live near the Great Lakes in Africa. This includes people in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. In Uganda, matoke is so important that the name means "food."

These bananas look different from others. The stems have black spots that look like metal. The fruit is green when it is picked. To make a meal, people peel the fruit. They wrap it in leaves and steam it in a pot.

Steam makes the fruit soft and yellow. People often mash it into a meal. They might eat it with meat or peanuts. In Uganda, they also make a breakfast dish called katogo. This uses bananas with beef or peanuts.

There are many kinds of these bananas. Some are used for beer. We call these the Mbidde clones. Others are soft and tasty. Some have long, thin fruit. Farmers have grown these for a very long time. They have many local names in different lands.
