Matilda is a famous children's book written by Roald Dahl. It was first published in 1988 by Jonathan Cape. The story follows a very smart girl named Matilda Wormwood. She is a child who learns to speak at age one. By the time she is four, she reads many big books.

Matilda's life is not easy because her parents do not care for her. She also has to deal with a mean headmistress named Miss Trunchbull. This book matters because it shows how a small person can be brave. It is a story about finding kindness in a hard world.

The story moves from Matilda's home to her school. At home, she plays tricks on her parents to feel better. She once even put a parrot in the chimney. At school, she meets a kind teacher named Miss Honey. Miss Honey is amazed by how much Matilda knows. However, Miss Trunchbull is a very scary leader who punishes students harshly.

Matilda discovers she has a special power called telekinesis. This means she can move things with her mind. She uses this power to help Miss Honey and stand up to the headmistress.

Roald Dahl wrote this story with some help from an editor. At first, Dahl wrote Matilda as a much meaner character. An editor named Stephen Roxburgh helped change her. He suggested making Matilda an innocent girl who loves books. This change made the story much more special.

Dahl also used real places for inspiration. He based the library on a place in Great Missenden. He even based Miss Trunchbull on a woman he knew as a boy.

Many people around the world love this book. It has sold more than 17 million copies. In 2003, a BBC survey put it at number 74 for top British novels. It was also ranked number 30 for best children's books in 2012.

The story has become many different things. There is a movie from 1996 directed by Danny DeVito. There is also a famous stage show called Matilda the Musical. This musical started in London in 2011 and then went to New York. It has won many big awards for its music and acting.

Matilda is a story that connects to many other things. You might know other books by Roald Dahl, like The BFG. You might have seen the movie versions of his stories too. Even the famous illustrator Quentin Blake drew pictures for the book. He once imagined Matilda as a grown-up explorer or a librarian.
