Material

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Everything around us is made of stuff. We call this stuff material. A material can be a pure substance. It can also be a mixture of things. Some materials come from living things. Other materials are not alive.

Scientists study these things. This study is called materials science. They look at how materials work. They also study how to use them. People can change raw materials. They can shape them or clean them. They can even mix them to make new things. This is called synthesis.

We use different materials for different jobs. Building materials help us make houses. Aerospace materials are used for planes. Some materials are used for nuclear power.

Materials have many properties. Properties are ways we describe how they act. Some materials are very stiff or strong. This is called mechanical properties. Other materials react to heat. This is called thermal properties. Some materials can even carry electricity. We can use tools like microscopy to see their tiny parts. This helps us understand their structure.
