A masque is a grand, festive show. It was very popular in Europe long ago. These shows combine music, singing, and dancing. They also include acting on a fancy stage.

Master designers made the sets and costumes. Some costumes were very special. For example, a knight might wear a plumed helmet and a heroic cuirass, which is a piece of armor.

Many kings and queens joined the fun. Queen Anne of Denmark danced with her ladies. King Henry VIII even dressed as Robin Hood once! Some shows were for weddings or new rulers. They often ended with a scene of peace and joy.

Professional actors did the singing and speaking. Other people, like courtiers, only danced. Sometimes a show had no talking at all. This was called a dumbshow. It used silent acting to tell a story. It was like a moving picture.

Some masques began as simple folk traditions. In these, masked players would visit a lord. They brought gifts and danced. At the end, the players took off their masks. Then everyone could see who they really were.
