The most famous feature of Masiakasaurus is its unique dentition, or tooth arrangement. Most theropods have teeth that point straight down. However, Masiakasaurus had procumbent front teeth. This means the teeth projected forward from the mouth. 
Scientists believe this specialized mouth helped the dinosaur eat a specific diet. The forward-pointing teeth were excellent for grasping small, slippery prey. The skull of Masiakasaurus was long and low. This is very different from the deep skulls seen in abelisaurids. The bones around the eyes, called the lacrimal and postorbital bones, had bumpy textures. The neck was narrow and supported by stout ribs. These ribs likely made the neck quite stiff compared to other dinosaurs.
Researchers first described Masiakasaurus in 2001. The team included Scott D. Sampson, Matthew Carrano, and Catherine A. Forster. They named the type species, Masiakasaurus knopfleri, after the musician Mark Knopfler. This was done because his music inspired the expedition crew.
We can also see two different forms within the genus. Researchers Carrano and colleagues identified a robust form and a gracile form in 2002. The robust form had thicker bones and larger muscle attachments. The gracile form was more slender with unfused tibiae, which are shin bones. These differences might show sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different. Alternatively, they might represent two different populations living in the same area. 
Studies on bone histology have revealed how Masiakasaurus grew. Scientists Lee and O'Connor found that the dinosaur grew determinately. This means it grew to a specific, fixed adult size. It reached maturity at a relatively small body size. It took about 8 to 10 years to reach the size of a large dog. This growth rate was 40% slower than other similar theropods. However, it grew 40% faster than modern crocodylians. This slow growth was likely an advantage. It allowed the dinosaur to save energy in a semiarid environment that had seasonal stress.
Masiakasaurus provides a vital link for understanding dinosaur evolution. Its physical features are intermediate between abelisaurids and more basal ceratosaurs. By studying its bones, scientists can trace how different groups of meat-eaters changed over time. The discovery of this small predator helps complete the picture of life in Late Cretaceous Madagascar. It shows how specialized animals can evolve to survive in specific environments.
