Walt Disney wanted to make a movie based on books by P. L. Travers. He tried to buy the rights as early as 1938. However, Travers said no for many years because she loved her books. She finally agreed in 1961. The Sherman Brothers wrote the music and helped plan the setting. They decided to set the story in the Edwardian era instead of the 1930s. This helped create the wonderful feeling of the movie.

The film was a massive success when it first came out.
