It is a unique production that combines live-action actors with animation. The film was directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney. It is based on the book series by P. L. Travers. The story follows a magical nanny who arrives in London. She visits the Banks family to improve their difficult relationship.

Through magic and music, she helps the family find joy again.

The film's magic begins with a gust of wind. Jane and Michael Banks write an advertisement for a kind nanny. Their father, George Banks, rips the paper into pieces. A strong wind carries these scraps up a chimney and into the sky. The wind then assembles the scraps back together. The next day, Mary Poppins descends from the clouds using an umbrella.

She uses her magic to help the children clean their nursery. She even transports the characters into a sidewalk chalk drawing. Inside this animated world, they ride a carousel and race horses. This blend of real people and drawings creates a sense of wonder.

There are several key characters who drive the story. Julie Andrews plays Mary Poppins, a woman who is firm but kind. Dick Van Dyke plays Bert, a jack-of-all-trades who is a friend to Mary. Bert performs many roles, including a street painter and a chimney sweep.

David Tomlinson plays George Banks, a strict man who works at a bank. Glynis Johns plays Winifred Banks, a mother who supports the suffrage movement. The children, Jane and Michael, seek attention through mischief. Each character represents a different part of the family's struggle to connect.

Creating this film involved a long history of negotiation. Walt Disney wanted to adapt the books for many years. He first tried to purchase the rights in 1938. However, P. L. Travers refused his offers for over two decades. She worried a film would not do justice to her writing.

Disney finally succeeded in 1961. Travers was allowed to serve as a consultant on the project. The Sherman Brothers also helped shape the film. They composed the music and suggested changing the setting to the Edwardian era.

The film was a massive commercial and critical success. It earned $44 million in theatrical rentals during its original run. This made it the highest-grossing film of 1964 in the United States. Worldwide, the film grossed more than $103 million.

Many interesting details exist within the production and its legacy. The film was shot at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The creators used painted London scenes for the backgrounds. Dick Van Dyke's name appeared in the credits as an anagram. It read "Navckid Keyd" before the letters unscrambled.

In 2013, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation. They added it to the National Film Registry. This honor recognizes films that are culturally or historically significant.

Mary Poppins connects to several other works and ideas. The 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks is a biographical drama. It tells the story of how the movie was made. There is also a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns, released in 2018. The film also touches on historical social movements. Winifred Banks is shown as a member of the suffrage movement. This movement fought for women's right to vote. The film uses fantasy to explore these real-world themes of family and change.
